Progreso, Yucatán — The Port Authority has reported a 4 percent rise in the number of cruise ship passengers coming ashore in the first quarter of 2015.

Over 47,500 tourists have been delivered by the Carnival Elation, Triumph and Magic, the wire service Notimex reported.

Cruise ship activity has been building steadily over the past several years. The increase builds on last year’s cumulative success, when 104 total 2014 cruise arrivals beat the 2013 tally of 98.

Yesterday the Carnival Triumph brought more than 3,000 passengers; even better, the Elation, from Galveston, Texas, brought 3,409 passengers and 1,080 crew. They arrived at 8 a.m. and either lounged and shopped at the beach and malecon, or took excursions to Mérida or the archeological sites before heading off to Cozumel.
