COVID-19 recoveries jump while 52 cases, 6 deaths are reported

A map from the Yucatan health ministry shows incidents of coronavirus infection in Merida, where by far the most cases have been found within the state.

Coronavirus recoveries far outnumbered new infections, a breakdown of today’s Yucatan Health Ministry data revealed.

Six more coronavirus patients died in the last 24 hours. This was the lowest death count since May 25, when two people perished. Daily deaths averaged between eight and nine in the last week.

This brings to 240 the number of people in the state who have died from the highly contagious respiratory disease.

Yucatan health officials also detected 52 new confirmed cases in the past 24 hours.

But 163 patients were declared recovered in the past 24 hours, encouraging news considering new infections often outnumber recoveries.

Roughly 70% of coronavirus patients here ultimately recover. Active cases are divided between 137 with mild symptoms and staying home and 142 more seriously ill patients in the hospital, five fewer than Wednesday.

A 51-year-old Merida man who also had chronic kidney failure was the youngest to die. A 78-year-old Merida woman and a Tecoh man the same age were the oldest. Both had diabetes as a complicating factor.

Of the new cases, 20 were in Merida, five each in Umán and Valladolid, three in Kanasín, two in Chemax, Maxcanú and Samahil and two were from either another state or country.

Acanceh, Baca, Chocholá, Dzan, Hoctún, Hunucmá, Maní, Muna, Seyé, Tecoh and Tizimín each had one new infection.
