Six coronavirus victims died in the last 24 hours, Yucatan health authorities announced, the highest number of fatalities in one day since May 3, when an equal number of deaths broke the state record. The number of COVID-19 deaths in the state has reached 63.
A 59-year-old Kanasín man with a history of diabetes and hypertension perished, as did an 81-year-old man, also from Kanasín; a 71-year-old Sanahcat woman; a 45-year-old man originally from Mexico City and a resident of Merida, with a history of obesity; a 66-year-old man, also originally from Mexico City and a resident of Mérida, with diabetes, obesity and chronic kidney failure; and a 71-year-old woman, originally from Campeche and a resident of Merida, with a medical history of obesity. Their contacts presented no signs of the virus.
Another 39 new infections were announced, to make a total of 735 positive cases, health authorities announced at a briefing on social media.
The new infections included 18 in Mérida, three in Kanasín, two each in Espita, Hocabá and Tahmek, and one each in Conkal, Izamal, Motul, Oxkutzcab, Progreso, Samahil, Sanahcat, Tetiz, Teya, Timucuy, Tixcacalcupul and Umán.
Of all the cases, 371 people have fully recovered, 13 more in one day, doctors said.
The Yucatecan patient infected and diagnosed in Canada was finally discharged after having been admitted 47 days ago the longest hospital stay of any patient in the state. Doctors said the woman, 59, is conscious and now breathing without a ventilator and well enough to continue her recovery at home.
Another 215 people are recuperating under quarantine at home, with mild symptoms, and there are 86 people hospitalized, four more than Wednesday.
The case in Oxkutzcab is that city’s first, said Mayor Raúl Antonio Romero Chel. The 59-year-old man, a farmer with diabetes and high blood pressure, is being treated at the O’Horán Hospital in Merida, 117 kilometers / 78 miles north of the rural municipality.
Mexico’s health ministry on Thursday reported 1,982 new confirmed cases of coronavirus infections and 257 additional fatalities, the most lethal day since the pandemic reached the country.
The national total of confirmed cases is at 29,616 and 2,961 deaths. The real number of infections is thought to be significantly higher than the confirmed cases.
