Mérida, Yucatán — The downtown property that will be the site of a new convention center happens to have one of Yucatán’s iconic cenotes on its grounds.

The cenote, and the trees around it, will stay and be restored, authorities promise.

Experts have been sizing up the property, assessing the 136 trees there for which ones are worth keeping, and which can be transplanted. The former residential block had many fruit trees, but also chacas, mahogany and cedar.

Some trees will be moved to other parks, or at the judicial building, which is in phase 2 of construction.

But Diario de Yucatan, in reporting this story, laments that construction will in the end destroy a “green cloud” habitat for birds, whose squawking could be heard by passersby.
