Mérida, Yucatán — El Bufette, a historic cantina on the corner of calles 62 and 65, has been closed by the police as a result of a landlord dispute, reports Diario de Yucatán.

Since opening in 1932, El Bufette was visited by all sorts of people, as long as they were men. Diario says El Bufette is one of the last “classic” cantinas, bars where women are prohibited from entering.

Its penultimate owner was Antonio Mézquita, better known as ““el calvo Valencia.” After his death, his son of the same name began to administer the operation before leaving for government agency work and leaving the cantina to a manager.

Employees say the cantina was behind in paying its rent.
