Merida, Yucatan – The Paseo de Montejo’s mansions and monuments are beautiful, but visitors rarely know their history.
Called “Montejo, pasado con esplendor” (“Montejo, Past Splendor”), a new city-run tour is free and offered to both residents and visitors curious to learn more about the capital city’s famed boulevard.
The walking tours are offered in both English and Spanish.
This time of year, the tour also allows participants to enjoy the Christmas decorations on the Paseo, noted Eduardo Seijo Solís, the director of economic development and tourism.
The tour route includes a visit to the old Club Bancarios (Banking Club) building, the current Fiesta Americana Hotel; Quinta Montes Molina, Casa del Minarete, the Museum of Anthropology, Casas Gemelas (the Twin Houses) and the Santa Ana Market.
Also included are the historic monuments to Justo Sierra, Felipe Carrillo Puerto and Monumento a la Patria.
In addition to admiring the architectural beauty of the buildings, visitors will receive information about the flora found on the Paseo de Montejo.
The guided tours will be weekdays at 5:30 p.m., leaving the tourist station at Avenida Colon. Its duration is approximately one hour and 30 minutes. Participants should arrive at least 10 minutes in advance.
