City moving used-car fair to extreme-sports property

Mérida, Yucatán — After years of disuse and despite the millions in investment behind the extreme-sports park in Bosques del Poniente, authorities are replacing it with the weekly auto market.

The Tianguis de Auto has been a big tradition each Sunday at the Central de Abastos, the lot which now houses the Sistine Chapel replica.

The auto fair was moved to the sports park on Oct. 21 to make way for the Sistine Chapel display. Now, city officials say the move is permanent.

Car buyers and sellers have been here for years, paying 30 pesos and staying until 4 p.m. Food and water was sold while people brought in folding chairs and haggled over used autos.

The abandoned skateboard and dirt-bike park, a half-mile away from the Central de Abastos, apparently never caught on since opening in 2015, under the previous administration.

Auto sales are apparently a bigger draw. People come each Sunday from as far away as Campeche and Quintana Roo. Clunkers and late-model cars sit side-by-side, where owners hope for a cash buyer.

Both are south of Avenida Jacinto Canek, just past the Soriana supermarket.

The move is expected at the end of January.

The sports park was an unfinished work in progress. Planned zip lines and rock-climbing walls were never built.
