Mérida, Yucatán — Public safety and the participation of society in planning the capital city’s future were two of the points discussed yesterday at a special City Council meeting chaired by the new mayor, Mauricio Vila Dosal. The body approved the creation of the Council for Planning and Development for the City of Mérida (COPLADEM) and the Municipal Council of Civil Protection.
Fundación BAI A.C, and its executive director, Dr. Carlos Cabrera, were immediately appointed to COPLADEM.
“I am so honored that Mérida’s new mayor proposed me and Fundación BAI A.C. to be part of the Council for the Development of the City,” said Dr. Cabrera. “This council will have representatives of all social, entrepreneurial and governmental sectors and will decide the official path to follow for the new administration, based on the principles of justice, equality, transparency and respect for human rights.”
For Fundación BAI, as a key social player in the city, the honor is recognition of its efforts to prevent teenage pregnancies, the spread of HIV and other STIs in the Yucatán.
Fundación BAI also served in the Municipal Council against Discrimination for the past administration and, as a new member of the Council for the Development of the City, it will conduct lobbying efforts to approve the creation of the new Council against Discrimination for the next three years, continuing the positive and important work many civil and governmental groups accomplished in the past administration.
Meanwhile, the organization goes from strength to strength, having just signed up three new expat volunteers to the Fundraising Committee. They have also just launched a brand new video showcasing the work that expats do to help with this important cause. The video is first for the non-profit, and the expats demonstrate the passion that drives them to help and explain how rewarding and fun it is to be part of this effort.
