A Chinese company is opening Mexico’s seventh Mi Store, filled with modern “smart” devices and phones, in the new wing of the Galerias mall.
It will be the seventh Xiaomi store in Mexico, and the first in the southeast.
Diario de Yucatan reported that the company is undertaking a rapid expansion that will result in a total of 29 stores this year, with branches in Cancun and Chiapas.
Founded in 2010, Xiaomi is the world’s fourth-largest smartphone brand and the number one smart-watch manufacturer. The Beijing-based tech company also makes smart headphones, televisions, lightbulbs and security cameras, all connected in a single app.
The company advertises itself as making tech “accessible for everybody,” and a check online indicates that its products are much cheaper than its competitors from Apple or Samsung. Xiaomi is a market leader in China and India.
The company did not officially announce its new store. Rather, word got out when a mall shopper posted a photo of a construction sign indicating the brand was coming soon. The sign did not give the date of a grand opening.
It will apparently be next to a McDonald’s, which is also “próximamente,” on the upper level above Pandora.
A Telcel store at Plaza Altabrisa across town started selling Xiaomi smart products, under the “My Connected House” brand, in October.
While not as well known in the U.S. or Canada, the Chinese brand is popular elsewhere. Several weeks ago, when Xiaomi opened its first brick-and-mortar store in Switzerland, hundreds of fans waiting outside since the early morning hours to get inside.
