As COVID-19 vaccinations for people 60 and over began Wednesday in Mérida, social media feeds quickly began to fill up with celebratory posts.

“Both my inlaws have now been vaccinated! Health personnel is doing an excellent job in Mérida,” said Twitter user @Delfy.

Health authorities called the first day of vaccinations “a complete success” and noted that they were very pleased with the turnout.

Residents who received vaccines noted that the process was a good deal quicker than they expected and that the entire process moved along smoothly.

“It was all very well organized and the whole thing took just over an hour. They also showed me the vaccine before they gave it to me, which really gave me more confidence. Thank you so much,” tweeted @Lugis4.

Vaccinations will continue for people 60 and over in Mérida until April 19. By that time, the government estimates that it will have vaccinated well over 100,000 people in the city.

A date for the second dose of the vaccines was not announced, but guidelines from the manufacturer indicate the ideal timeframe to be between four and 12 weeks.

It is unknown when the vaccinations will be available to people in the next age group — likely those between the ages of 40 and 59.

Yesterday, federal health authorities approved the use of a new COVID-19 vaccine made in India called Covaxin.

With this new addition, Mexico has now approved a total of six COVID-19 vaccines: AstraZeneca, Cansino, Covaxin, Pfizer, Sinovac and Sputnik V.
