Car thefts down, but thieves have favorite targets

Cars aren’t stolen as often as they used to be, but when thieves hit, they prefer Nissans and Volkswagens.

In 2009, 408 cars were reported stolen in Yucatán. But that number has been steadily declining in the last three years. In 2015, that number was down to 117 cars, according to the Executive Secretariat of the National System of Public Security.

Nissan has five models that are best-sellers in Mexico; those same models are on the list of most-stolen cars. The Tsuru — which is being phased out of the market nationally — accounts for 3.4 cars out of every 100 stolen.

Honda and Yamaha motorcycles are also popular among thieves.

By far, most cars are taken by sneak thieves. The Attorney General’s Office said that Yucatan is “not on the map” when it comes to violent car theft.

Yucatán is also among the states with the best rate of recovery, where stolen cars are returned to their rightful owners.

Most car thefts are reported on Mondays and Fridays, and in places cars are left alone for several hours, such as supermarkets, shopping malls, cinemas and schools.
