Car and motorcycle thefts on the decline in Yucatan

Yucatan by far has the fewest motor-vehicle thefts in the nation

Motor-vehicle thefts are down 29 percent in Yucatan for the first four months of 2019.

The 86 reported thefts compare to 121 last year at this time, authorities said. Thieves targeted motorcycles 70 percent of the time.

In 2018, 98 percent of all motor-vehicle thefts in Yucatan involved motorcycles.

According to the Criminal Incidence Report of the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System, 19 vehicle thefts were reported in January, 17 in February, 32 in March and 18 in April.

No violence was connected with any of the reported thefts, security officials said.

2018 closed with 301 motor-vehicle thefts.

Yucatan had fewer such incidences than any other state in Mexico. It is followed by Nayarit, with 159 cases; and Campeche, with 183. 

The most motor-vehicle thefts so far this year are in the State of Mexico, with 16,403 thefts. The second place is occupied by Jalisco, with 7,455; the third is Baja California, with 4,924.

No crime rate adjusted for population was provided.
