A 5.7 magnitude earthquake in the Caribbean Sea, north of Honduras, was felt as far away as Chetumal and Cancun on Monday morning, according to authorities in Quintana Roo.
Northern Honduras was the most shaken by the shallow 5.7 magnitude earthquake, according to the United States Geological Survey. Its epicenter was near the Bay Islands, 90 kilometers northwest of Coxen Hole, an area popular with tourists. There were no immediate reports of damage.
The quake, around 10 km / 6.2 miles below ground, hit at 9:13 a.m., the USGS said.
Residents in Chetumal reported on social media feeling tremors twice. Cancun residents said they perceived it as well.
Quintana Roo Gov. Carlos Joaquín González confirmed the reports and sent Civil Protection monitors to find evidence of damage.
