Progreso, Yucatan — A Canadian man was stabbed to death Friday morning in an apartment he rented on Calle 25, police said.

“Our friends were victims of a thwarted robbery, of a man who decided to take the life of another,” said a friend on social media. Local news sites have disagreed on the circumstances of the killing of Bruce Allen, 70, of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.

The friend said relatives have been informed and will decide on whether burial should take place in Canada or Yucatan.

“Bruce always smiling, kind, polite, calm and with a deep look that it seems that nothing happens in the world,” said the unnamed friend. “A man you could trust and that even in his way of walking showed you La Paz that he reflected.”

He is survived by his partner of many years, Herman Savoie. Condolences from friends and neighbors were numerous on various Facebook groups this morning.

Local police said that public surveillance cameras have helped identify a suspect, last seen running toward Calle 44. An image of the suspect has not been released.
