Soho Galleries turns 6, goes ‘Back to Cuba’
Fri., November 14, 2014 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Since Soho Galleries opened in November 2008, it has hosted three major exhibitions of Cuban art. To coincide with its sixth anniversary, Soho Galleries presents “Back to Cuba,” an exhibit highlighting the work of several important Cuban artists including pottery by Jorge Antonio Jacas Vivanco and recent work by Sandra Dooley.
Jorge Jacas was born in Santiago de Cuba in 1957, has participated in 47 group shows and 20 individual shows in Cuba and abroad. Jorge Jacas represented Cuba at the 8th Biennial of Ceramic Art in Belgium, and in 2009 he exhibited an individual show and was a member of the jury at the Ceramics Biennal Amelia Peláez. His work is on permanent display in the National Museum of Contemporary Ceramics in Cuba and is included in public and private collections around the world.
Featured at the show will be a selection of his three-dimensional ceramic pieces, as well as two-dimensional works meant to be hung on the wall like canvases. Jorge Jacas will be attending the show and will be available to discuss his work.
Sandra Dooley’s work, a combination of fabric and acrylic paints on canvas, is familiar to art collectors in Cuba and around the world. She has been exhibiting her work since 2000 in Cuba, Canada, Germany, Mexico, and the United States.
Catering by Anita the Sausage Lady.
Show runs through January 2015.
