Movie night at Il Caffé, a charming Italian restaurant on a pedestrian road behind the Peón Contreras theater. Have dinner on your own at 6 to enjoy a free movie, aimed at English-speaking audiences, at 7.
Tonight’s movie is based on a true story. “The King of Masks” (1996) follows an aging street performer (Wang Bianlian) in 1930s China and his search for an apprentice for his quick-change mask routine (which is fascinating in and of itself). But because of the time and place, local custom dictates that the apprentice be male, so Wang adopts a young orphan only to discover later that he is a she. The winner of 23 awards at international film festivals.
Previously on Wednesdays, the weekly event is now on a Tuesday schedule.
