Images of long lines in front a well-known pawn shop in the center of Mérida circulated through social networks Saturday.

The Yucatecans, who since the end of March remained in isolation to avoid the spread of coronavirus, left quarantine to sell jewelry, silver and most anything else for cash.

Commenters on Facebook lamented that they must have been desperate to stand in line, in the hot street, risking their health for money.

The food basket from the state government is not sufficient for more than a few day, commenters noted.

Despite the fact that President Andrés Manuel López Obrador called on companies not to fire their employees, many people reported that they did not comply, reports Sipse.

Others kept their jobs, but with their salaries slashed.
