Mérida, Yucatán — At 35, former world boxing champion Giovani Segura is moving to Mérida, training for a professional comeback.
He says he accepts the fact that he will have to train in overdrive to get that done.
“A week ago I settled in Merida, Yucatan, it is a city that welcomed us very well when we fought here in 2009, which I fell in love with and that came with renewed illusions both professionally and personally, because I have not only started my training at the Balukas Boxing Gym but also thinking about starting my high school studies, it’s never too late,” Segura said to ESPN Deportes.
The boxer (33-4-1, 29 KOs) has not fought since June 2016, and prior to that his last match was in September 2014 when he was defeated by Juan Francisco Estrada at flyweight.
A flyweight boxer weighs no more than 115 pounds (52 kg); at bantamweight, he can’t pass 123 pounds (56 kg). Segura was a light flyweight champion of the World Boxing Association and the World Boxing Organization, when he weighed no more than 108 pounds (49 kg).
“There is a good group of champions in super flyweight. I think I can be there, that’s my purpose, to go back and work hard to earn the opportunity and the respect to be able to fight with them, I know what to do, you just have to work,” Segura said to ESPN.
The five-foot, three-inch-tall boxer was born in Ciudad Altamirano, Mexico, in the “Tierra Caliente/Hot Land” region of the Mexican state of Guerrero.
