Mérida, Yucatán — With more than 13 million pesos invested, snack factory La Lupita is generating 100 percent of its electricity from its own solar power plant, the largest of its kind in southeast Mexico.

The plant, equipped with 1,208 solar panels, held a press conference to trumpet the accomplishment and promote the  use of solar power by more households and commercial buildings.

Botanas La Lupita, which produces chips and tortillas, is the first company in the country to produce all of its electricity from solar energy.

Francisco Solís Baeza, of solar panel manufacturer Comermex, said that La Lupita is part of a wider trend. In 2013, solar panel production increased 50 percent over the previous year.

For La Lupita, the panels were manufactured in the United States and the system was designed and installed by Conermex and Electromecánica Mérida.

La Lupita will prevent 7,000 tons of CO2 emissions, comparable to the pollution that would be produced by 100 midsize cars, and the benefit is equivalent to planting 12,000 trees.
