Mérida, Yucatán — Diario de Yucatán has taken notice of Botica del Barrio, a customer-focused pharmacy opened by an expat who understand that many potential customers don’t speak Spanish well.

Andy Ristau, a Canadian who lives in Mérida, chose a once-sleepy spot along the Paseo de Montejo that’s become very active. The block between Calle 43 and 45 also is home to Sukra Bar de Café and, more recently, Bollicine Aperitivo. The storefronts face a small grove of trees and face the twin mansions, a placid spot considering the massive traffic that passes by. On the next block north is El Estudio Home Decor and Hennessy’s Irish Pub, two busy businesses also owned by expats.

As Diario noted, the drugstore opened opened three months ago with the concept of personalized customer service that independent stores reminiscent of days gone by. Health and beauty items are also sold, and service is offered in both Spanish and English.

Dr. Tonath Azcárate Cora is a partner and is the medical officer in charge.

Botica del Bario is open 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 9 to 1 on Saturdays and Sundays.
