Agitated bees attacked numerous supermarket customers at Chedraui Caucel, where at least two customers were sent to a hospital.

Bees may have been fleeing smoke at kilometer 35, where one of several brush fires raged over the weekend.

Bees swarmed the supermarket entrance, attacking customers attempting to enter or exit, according to Diario de Yucatán.

Firefighters responded to the scene to control the situation and ambulances were called for two customers with bee allergies.

More than 20 brush fires were reported over the weekend, which registered the year’s most searing temperatures so far.

Fires in Tekantó, Oxkutzcab, Tixkokob and Conkal were extinguished by firefighters.

In Mérida, near the Motul Bridge on the road to Tizimín, some 50 hectares of land burned, according to Diario de Yucatán. Centro residents complained of odors coming from the blazes miles away.

There was also a major fire in the north of Merida, near the Lagunas de Oxidación, which consumed about 30 hectares. Smoke clogged roadways at Francisco de Montejo and Chuburná.

Temperatures in the region have subsided just a little after the weekend’s punishing heat.

According Conagua, the municipality with the highest temperatures was Chocholá with 41.5C/106.7F degrees, with Motul Petorca, Muna, Cantamayec, Mocochá and Ticul at 40C/104F.

Heat-related health warnings were issued for residents, especially those with diabetes.
