Federal aid is off by as much as 800 million pesos in 2020, said Yucatan Gov. Mauricio Vila Dosal.
The state cabinet analyzed next year’s economic package as presented by President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador and discovered less money than expected will be coming, said Vila Dosal.
That will force Vila Dosal to continue with Yucatan’s own austerity policy, which has been under effect since his administration began late last year.
Yucatan’s 2018 budget, which strongly depended on federal subsidies, was down 3.5 billion pesos, or about 8%.
“The situation forces us again to continue tightening our belts, so that we can be more efficient,” said Vila Dosal. “I believe that this government has undoubtedly shown that austerity is something that works, and of course you have to be austere and follow by being efficient.”
Interviewed at the end of the civic-military parade on Independence Day, Vila Dosal said that during this year the government will emphasize doing more with less to fulfill its commitments.
On another issue, the governor expressed his approval that Yucatan will host the 17th Annual Nobel Peace Prize World Summit, which will be held Sept. 19 to 21.
One Nobel laureate, Iranian Shirin Ebadi, who in 2003 received the award for his efforts for democracy and human rights, is already in Yucatecan territory.
