Mérida, Yucatán — Build an aquarium in Progreso and an entertainment-hotel complex somewhere on the coast. Remove the hoards of vendors from Chichén Itzá. Move the Chicxulub Crater Museum to where else but Chicxulub.

Those are among the main proposals leaders of the tourism sector submitted in a private session with the four candidates for governor.

They also talked planting more trees along the iconic Paseo de Montejo and representing Yucatán in more national and international tourist fairs.

The proposals were made by hoteliers, tour operators and convention organizers at the  III State Tourism Conference on April 12. A press conference summarizing the event was held Thursday by Héctor Navarrete Medina, the president of the Mexican Association of Hotels in Yucatán.

“The tourist activity has an enormous potential as a source of employment for the residents of Yucatán; that has been embedded in the economic life of Yucatan, fostering greater investment in public and private infrastructure and, consequently, a greater number of people employed in this activity,” said Navarrete.

The 41 proposals were related to either tourism infrastructure, tourism promotion or laws and regulations.

They also suggest the return of the Feria Turística del Mundo Maya, or the Mayan World Tourism Fair, that would engage tourists and participants from Europe, the United States, Canada and South America.
