Mérida, Yucatán — With the children of the Hogares Maná association by his side, Mayor Mauricio Vila Dosal welcomed the public “all aboard” a scaled-down express train that traverses the Animaya Bicentennial Zoological Park in Ciudad Caucel.

The family attraction, which consists of three cars with capacity for 39 people, is wired for sound to provide guided tours. It is also suitable for people with disabilities.

The vehicle roams Animaya in 20 minutes. It’s a free service, open since the weekend.

The inauguration followed the Day of the Child celebrations, where games and prizes attracted more than 6,300 people to the Animaya park on Saturday.

More improvements are coming to the park, including a playground and a covered dining area.

In contrast to the historic Parque Zoológico del Centenario in the center of the city, the Animaya zoo is more of a safari park. It opened in 2010.

Animaya is on Calle 60 at 59 in Ciudad Caucel, very close to the Periférico. To get there, take the Avenida Jacinto Canek to the Caucel highway.

The zoo is open Tuesday to Friday, 10 a.m. to noon and 1:30 p.m to 4 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to noon and 1:15 p.m to 4 p.m.
