Mérida, Yucatán — After a stop in Quintana Roo on Thursday, President-elect Andrés Manuel López Obrador will visit Mérida today (Friday).

López Obrador is expected to arrive in the city around 10 a.m., and hold another meeting with federal and state legislators, as well as attend to residents of the community of Homún, where a battle against a corporate pig farm has citizens on edge.

State officials announced that Gov.Mauricio Vila Dosal will receive AMLO at 1 p.m. in the Government Palace. He is also planning to meet privately with legislators at various levels.

López Obrador is expected to greet the public with a speech across the street, on the Plaza Grande, later in the afternoon. Reports range from 2 to 5 p.m. on what time the rally begins.

He is expected to promote the Mayan Train, his ambitious project to connect various sites across the Yucatán Peninsula by 900 kilometers of rail.

Security precautions are likely to affect traffic around the first square of the Centro throughout the day.

His local political ally, Joaquín “Huacho” Díaz Mena, used Twitter to invite the public to hear the president-elect speak.

AMLO, as he is affectionately known, has been on a state-by-state “tour of gratitude.” He then heads to Campeche on Saturday and his native Tabasco on Sunday.

He takes office on Dec. 1, and bids on the train project are expected to be immediately issued.
