The tourism promotion campaign “Yucatán ven por todo” happens high up in the sky.

In an extension of the state’s virtual-reality promotion, tourism officials have partnered with Volaris airlines. Passengers flying to destinations that connect to Mérida will be handed Gear VR sets which show, at 360 degrees and in 3D, the peninsula’s natural beauty, archaeological sites, cenotes, beaches, cuisine and culture of the Mayab.

The first passengers to see this will have been traveling between Mexico City and Guadalajara, according to a statement from the Secretary of Tourism Promotion, or SEFOTUR.

For the past four years, Volaris has been an ally of the state, as it reactivated its daily connection to Mexico City, and established three weekly operations in Monterrey and the capital of Jalisco, considered key points for transfers and travel abroad.

The idea is to lure more domestic and foreign tourists, given the increase in the number of seats available to reach the Yucatán.

The customized Samsung Gear sets will also be seen at travel trade shows and will eventually be handed out on other airlines.
