Merida, Yucatan — A pair renting a home from a local Airbnb host ransacked the property, stole a bike and televisions, and even killed the goldfish.

That’s what a friend of the homeowner reported on Facebook, saying he was “sad, annoyed and outraged.”

The couple slipped by normal Airbnb vetting processes, talking the landlord into allowing the house to be rented without identification.

“They entered the house taking advantage of (the homeowner’s) trust,” said the friend.

The thefts were allegedly compounded with malicious vandalism.

“They trashed everything they could,” the friend said. “They broke doorknobs, curtains … as amazing as it seems, they emptied beer in the fishbowl obviously killing all the fish.”

The homeowner alerted authorities and gave them one valuable clue, the license plate number of the car in which they arrived.
