Mérida, Yucatán — Winds of up to 74 kilometers/45 miles per hour and heavy rains swept through the region, toppling both trees and billboards and knocking out power for shops in the Centro market district.

The intense storms on Tuesday afternoon affected virtually the entire peninsula, especially central Yucatán and south central Campeche.

By 5 p.m., some 900 lightning strikes were recorded across the state.

On Twitter, neighbors from Caucel, Pinos, Cordemex, Chuburná, Francisco de Montejo, Centro, Opichén and Mayapán and from the ports of Uaymitún and Telchac, shared images and videos documenting the dramatic storm.

Some videos showed street flooding, while others demonstrated the difficulty facing drivers, whose windshield wipers barely kept up with the downpour.

Strong winds knocked down a Royal PalmTree on the Paseo de Montejo at Calle 37, while in Emiliano Zapata Norte, a Telmex pole crashed onto a parked Jetta.

Flights were briefly suspended at the airport because of poor visibility.
