Tizimín, Yucatán — “Christmas is not only about opening gifts, it is about opening our hearts.” That is the phrase with which students from Impulso Universitario invite the public to “Adopt a Grandparent.”
As one young woman explained, the project’s objective is to fulfill the wishes of 20 elderly, often forgotten residents at Casa del Anciano Los Tres Reyes. Many at the hostel do not have relatives and are basically alone in the world.
They ask for just basics: Socks, sandals, sweaters, personal hygiene items.
Their photos and a list of their modest wishes are on Facebook. Anyone who wants to sponsor an abuelo or abuela can visit the page and comment on photographs. Or contact Adelaida Chávez (986-100-5304), Karla Sánchez (986-101-4019) or Karina Uh (986-106-4015).
Gifts should be delivered by Dec. 20 for delivery on Dec. 21, preferably with an uplifting message from the donor.
