Yucatán Expat Life has grown into a well-respected source of news and information serving the readers interested in this part of Mexico. We endeavor to foster empathy and a better understanding of the Yucatan Peninsula.
Our platform includes a Facebook page that has more followers than any other English-language news media in Yucatán. Yucatán Expat Life is also an official Google News site, which gives our content greater global distribution.
YEL is owned by Mérida-based Roof Cat Media S. de R.L., and run by a staff of three lovers of all things Yucatecan. The content director is Lee Steele.
We conduct interviews with interesting people, interpret news stories from other media sources and add context, and maintain a calendar of events. We post stories daily, and compile our best stuff in a free Yucatán Expat Life Roundup (sign up here if you’d like to receive the newsletter).
Our calendar leads readers to Yucatán’s best community and cultural events. It is free to submit events to our calendar.
Mainly, we endeavor to offer information that is relevant, illuminating … or at least worth two minutes of your time.
Yucatán Expat Life was started in late 2011 as a web portal with occasional news tips, recipes and advice. We’ve evolved into something with more energy and relevance, but one thing never changed: our commitment to share our love and appreciation of Yucatán.
Since our quiet launch, we’ve had time to clear our throats and find our voice.
Trial and error is an awesome process. Somewhere along the way we added “Life” to our name, emphasizing what we found out about our readers. You want to read stories that are meaningful to your everyday lives, add context to things you may have observed, spell out social and economic trends, and help you make plans and decisions.
