Mérida, Yucatán — A building that served as a landmark to past generations has been torn down in the name of a growing Hotel Zone.
The long-shuttered La Curacao appliance store at Calle 62 and Avenida Colón will be replaced by a Courtyard by Marriott, which is rising near the new International Convention Center “Powered by Samsung.”
In its time, the store one of Mérida’s largest, and it was prominent enough to be considered a landmark: “Go to La Curacao and take Calle 62, and you’ll get straight to the Centro,” for example.
In its place will be a multi-story building with 160 rooms designed for business travelers. Construction is expected to last 10 months.
The immediate area already has a Fiesta Americana, which opened in the early 1970s; a Hyatt Regency built in the 1990s; an Intercontinental Presidente, a Holiday Inn and an Ibis, among other brands. And more are on the way.
Mérida will have 10,065 units in 249 hotels by the end of the year. The convention center is due to open in March.
