A 1-month-old baby boy from Merida and a 93-year-old grandfather were among the eight in Yucatan who died after battling coronavirus, health officials said Monday. Another 65 new infections were found, the seventh day since Sept 12 that daily cases totaled less than 100.
To date, 17,539 people in Yucatan have been infected with COVID-19 — an official count widely thought to be far lower than reality — and 14,227 have recovered. So far 2,249 people have died in Yucatan from coronavirus.
Current patients include 846 people with mild symptoms who remain isolated in their homes The other 217 are in the hospital, four more than were announced Sunday.
New infections included 33 were in Mérida, 20 in Valladolid, two in Chichimilá, Progreso and Temozón; and one in Abalá, Chacsinkín, Hunucmá, Tekax, Tinuim and Tzucacab.
All eight fatalities were male, and several suffered from conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, obesity, COPD, asthma, chronic kidney failure or heart disease.
Six lived in Mérida and one each in Buctztoz and Ticul.
Children and babies have not been immune from coronavirus in Yucatan. The youngest to perish include:
- June 22: a 6-month-old baby from Candelaria, Campeche
- July 12: a 14-year-old with leukemia from Mérida
- July 23: a 3-year-old girl from Quintana Roo
- July 24: a 5-year-old girl from Espita
- August 8: a 14-year-old teenager from Dzilam González
- Aug 20: a 1-year-old baby from Chankom
- Aug 21: a 2-month-old baby from Peto
- Aug. 22: an 11-month-old baby from Tixméhuac
- Sept. 5: a 13-year-old girl
- Sept. 21: a 1-month-old baby from Merida
The age range of positive cases remains from one month to 99 years, state officials said.
