The highlight of the 2015 Festival of Sexual Diversity Yucatán, which will take place May 13 to June 13, is on its last day, when a pride march winds its way from Mejorada Park to the Plaza Grande.

The festival aims to raise awareness and create a culture of respect for sexual diversity to eradicate or reduce homophobic discrimination in the state.

A free opening-day reception for FESDY  is 7 p.m. at the José Martí library in Las Americas park.

Among other activities, a Bici Ruta gathering will be organized 10 a.m. Sunday, May 31 at the remate of the Paseo de Montejo. On June 7, a trip to Chichen Itza is planned. Check their Facebook page to keep up with happenings.

Yucatán is thought of as tolerant toward gay and lesbian people, but homophobic crimes are often hidden from the public record, said Alfredo Morales Candiani, president of the Association of Cultural Rights and Sexual Diversity.

“We will keep working day after day to make society increasingly aware of the problem of discrimination and crimes due to homophobia,” he said.

Morales Candiani was not hopeful that any politician will rally for the gay rights cause.

“We are convinced that every election period is the same: seek us with promises of change, but then we sit and wait, and this occurs every three years.”
