“Learn the lingo, gringo,” jokes the publisher of a handy booklet that is hot off the press.

The “Spanish Language Primer & Living Tips Resource for Yucatan” is a comprehensive quick-reference guide that will help make day-to-day communication and travel easier for the non-Spanish speaker.

And it’s also an opportunity to do good.

All proceeds from the sale of the 52-page booklet go to Maya Indian Missions, which serves Maya communities outside of Mérida — Cosgaya, Noc-ac, San Antonia Hool, Dzitya, Komchen and Sierra Papacal.

The guide costs 80 pesos and is available through Missions volunteer Rosemary Adams, who notes that Spanish speakers are also buying copies for their English-speaking amigos who keep badgering them to teach them Spanish.

Chapters include guides to offering greetings and seeking emergency aid, as well as advice on banking, parking, insurance and medical care. For drivers, a guide to highway signs, highway assistance and service stations is part of the “Living Guide.”

Adams said it took two years to raise money to get this book printed locally.
