Mérida, Yucatán — The exhibition “La Vida Profunda” brings more than fifty selected works of artist James HD Brown to Fundación de Artistas.
The unique features of this particular collection, curated by Hilario Galguera, “surprises and sets it apart from the immense number of exhibitions” which Brown has had around the world, the foundation announced.
Born in Los Angeles in 1951, Brown is today active in Paris and Oaxaca; his Wikipedia biography compares his work to to Jean-Michel Basquiat and East Village painting of the 1980s, but with influences from primitive art and classical Western modernism.
The show is composed of paintings from different periods and formats, a bronze sculpture, ceramics and art books produced by the publisher Carpe Diem, which Brown owns with his partner Alexandra.
According to the Fundación:
Fully appropriating the space of the house in central Mérida, the curator proposes an emotional journey without any thematic guide through a elegant, symmetrical, formal and conceptual balance explored by Brown in his work. More than an exhibition based on an analysis and knowledge of a particular body of work or framed on a specific topic or a technique such as painting, drawing, watercolor, collage and ceramics, or within a specific period of the artist’s work, it is presented, as an emotional journey along the antique architecture of the house trying to replicate the same spiritual and sensitive emotion of the artist in his incessant observation of the universe, to finally encounter the beauty in all of its manifestations. Seeing through his eyes and feeling the same vital beat.
The exhibition, which was inaugurated on Friday, will remain open Tuesdays to Sundays, 11 a.m. -7 p.m. until Saturday, Feb. 27, 2016. The gallery is in Santa Lucia neighborhood, on Calle 55 No. 520 between 62 and 64.
Fundación de Artistas is dedicated to presenting exhibitions and increase awareness of the importance of artistic expressions. Also an educational space, the foundation organizes lectures, seminars, concerts and plays.
The operation is directed by Indira Londoño and was founded by Nicholas Malleville, Francesca Bonato, Jacopo Janniello Ravagnan and Julio Matias Gonzalez. Fundación de Artistas is a non-profit organization and all proceeds are dedicated to help promote interest in the arts.
