Coronavirus infections in Yucatan reached 3,096 when 90 new infections were announced Sunday by state health officials. Hospitalizations also shot up.

Another 10 patients died, a spokeswoman also revealed during the evening briefing. Deaths now total 373, including 70 in the deadliest seven-day stretch Yucatan has seen since COVID-19 arrived in March.

The Yucatan Health Ministry warned of an increase in cases in areas most affected by tropical storm Cristobal earlier in June when residents were displaced by floods and aided by rescue workers. Downtown streets have also been crowded and social distancing measures often ignored, although most pedestrians have been seen wearing facemasks.

The day’s numbers were slightly less than Saturday’s, when a record 96 infections were announced, as well as 12 deaths. More than half, 52, were reported in Merida.

Recoveries from the illness reached 2,349, including 61 in the past 24 hours.

Of active cases, 174 are in stable condition and at home, while 200 are in the hospital, 19 more than the day before.

Deaths included a 47-year-old man from Tulum, Quintana Roo; a 48-year-old woman from Kanasín; a 49-year-old man from Izamal; a 58-year-old man from Valladolid; a 60-year-old woman from Palenque, Chiapas; a 68-year-old woman from Motul; an 81-year-old woman from Mérida; an 81-year-old man from Umán; an 85-year-old man from Timucuy and a person from Tekit.
