One of Merida’s major hotels is going out of business after enduring months of pandemic lockdown.

The Presidente InterContinental in the hotel zone will close on an unspecified date due to the impact of COVID-19 in Mexico, said owner Grupo Presidente. A sister hotel, the Holiday Inn in Los Cabos, will also shut down.

“As a result of the severe damage caused by events related to the virus identified as COVID-19 , Grupo Presidente finds itself in the need to definitively cancel the operations of the Presidente InterContinental Mérida and Holiday Inn Resort Los Cabos All Inclusive hotels. … We regret the inconvenience and we will stay close during this process to facilitate the options that best suit your needs,” said a spokesman through a news release.

Both hotels still appeared to be accepting reservations online as of Wednesday morning.

The 127-room hotel in Yucatan inhabits a remodeled old 19th-century mansion. But it faces modern-day competition.

The Presidente shares an intersection with the Hyatt Regency and the Fiesta Americana, Merida’s largest hotels, and is close to the International Convention Center, which has been quiet even before the pandemic. More hotels were being built in the hotel zone, including a Courtyard by Marriott down the street, while two high-rise destinations opened around the corner at Paseo 60.

The hotel was extensively remodeled in 2016 and a new restaurant was established off the lobby.

Since 1994, Grupo Presidente has been Mexico’s representative of the InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG), the world’s largest hotel chain.
