Merida, Yucatan — A man, 36, was the first in Yucatan to die of COVID-19 as the the number of coronavirus cases spiked Friday.
An additional seven COVID-19 cases were counted, bringing the official count to 61.
A pre-existing condition, obesity, was attributed to the death of the man, whose identity was not revealed. Most coronavirus fatalities have been older men.
Another 73 possible coronavirus cases are still under study.
In a short message, Gov. Mauricio Vila asked the population to take the health contingency very seriously and implored citizens to take precautions against contracting or spreading coronavirus.
Yucatan ranks sixth in the nation in coronavirus cases per capita.
