Merida, Yucatan — Preparing for the spotlight’s glare next year, Gov. Mauricio Vila Dosal announced a 200-million-peso expansion of the Siglo XXI convention center and a revitalized traffic and public transportation plan.

Thousands of tourism professionals will descend on Yucatan in 2020, now that Merida has gotten what it asked for — hosting duties at Tianguis Turistico Mexico.

It is Yucatan’s chance to position itself as a desirable place for guests to send their clients. And officials are apparently aware that growing congestion issues could leave a bad impression.

Vila Dosa also indicated that after a study executed by transport specialists, which concludes at the beginning of April at the latest, new road projects such as overpasses will be built. Experts are mainly sizing up Merida’s north, where 18 road congestion points have been identified.

The 90s-era Siglo XXI Convention Center was Merida’s top trade-show space until the International Convention Center opened nearly a year ago in the hotel zone.

Now the Siglo XXI, several miles up the Prolongacion de Paseo Montejo, will grow from 13,000 to 22,000 square meters of construction.

The state will also restart its bus program, Situr, which fell short of its promise to streamline public transportation in 2014. And while gas prices continue to climb, the governor has indicated that lower fares are in the offing.

Traffic is a pressing issue in the capital city. In 2003, 130,000 vehicles, were on the road. Fifteen years later, that number increased by more than four times.
