Merida, Yucatan — An exhibit at La Cupula gathers 12 contemporary artists who pay tribute to a noted Mexican artist who died in September at age 73.

“Origin and Matter, Tribute to Yvonne Domenge” opens 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 20 in honor of the Mexico City artist.

Artists Beatriz Canfield, Gerda Gruber, Yolanda Gutiérrez, Perla Krauze, Marine Láscaris, Miriam Medrez, Aurora Noreña, Edna Pallares, Yolanda Paulsen, Karen Perry, Maribel Portela and Laura Rosete have taken part in the tribute.

Domenge participated in more than 50 individual and 165 collective exhibitions in Mexico, the United States, Canada, Europe and Asia. The Louvre Museum in Paris, the Museum of Modern Art in Mexico City and Boeing galleries at Millennium Park, Chicago, were among her venues. The latter forum featured a large-scale exhibit, “Interconnected: The Sculptures of Yvonne Domenge,” in 2011.

She was also the recipient of the Vancouver Biennale’s Lifetime Achievement Award in Sculpture and Public Art.

In addition to her work as an artist, Domenge was also passionately involved in philanthropy: she participated in projects to address social issues such as housing programs in the Mexican state of Chiapas (Programa Emergente de Vivienda para Chiapas Nuevo Milenio) and worked with the inhabitants of the Buenos Aires neighborhood, a low-income housing area in Mexico City, to involve them in the creation of sculptural artworks.

Born in Mexico City in 1946, Domenge studied sculpture in Mexico City, Montreal and Washington D.C. She took part in workshops on painting, sculpture and material techniques such as gilding, enameling and wood carving under the guidance of professors Kitzia Hofmann, Alberto Pérez Soria and Somsy Smuthart.
