Weekend Mexico City-Mérida flights sold out

The Mérida international airport will be busy this weekend.

This weekend’s Hanal Pixán activities have stimulated air travel from the nation’s capital. So much so that flights to Mérida from Mexico City have sold out through Sunday.

Travelers have been put on waiting lists, or routed through Cancun, to reach Mérida for Day of the Dead festival celebrations.

ASUR regional director Hector Navarrete said that the first half of 2016 saw an increase of 15 percent in the number of passengers compared to the same period last year. Navarrete manages Mérida’s Manuel Crescencio Rejón International Airport.

The Yucatecan terminal this year will exceed 1.5 million visitors, 200,000 more than predicted, according to Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste, or ASUR, which runs nine airports from its headquarters in Mexico City.

The year began with healthy convention and workshop travel, followed by Day of Love and Friendship, Carnival and the beginning of Lent.

The Manuel Crescencio Rejón International Airport has been operating for 45 years, and is growing in both visitors and connections, both domestic and internationally.
