Mérida, Yucatán — An Alerta ONVI, or UFO Alert, an event that brings like-minded enthusiasts and researchers together to spot unidentified objects flying in the sky, is being formed.

Alertas are popular around the world, especially in Spain, where thousands of people gather simultaneously, often before television cameras. These meetups can last until 4 a.m.

The unwritten rules is that participants bring their own food, with alcohol prohibited, because this is not a party.

Yucatán has a long history of UFO sitings, so Alertas and the peninsula would seem to be made for each other. Sipse is helping a young Meridano named Alejandro Aguilar Mendiola spread the word.

There has been a rash of reported UFO sightings this year, especially in Progreso, and some even believe the Maya recorded sighting of their own. But headlines associating Yucatán and alien encounters have been mainstays of the local press for years.

In October, a letter was published in Milenio Novedades that citizens should develop a culture of “looking at the sky from time to time” and not overlook the occasion of a visit from a possible spacecraft.
