Mérida, Yucatán — The Attorney General’s office is investigating accusations from an Uber driver that a group of taxi drivers smashed his car with rocks and sticks.
According to the criminal complaint, at approximately 3 a.m. Sunday, a group of taxi drivers chased and blocked an Uber driver at the intersection of Calle 62 and Calle 87.
At that point, two people got out of their Radio-Taxímetros and smashed out the Uber’s back window.
Tensions have not eased since the ride-sharing service expanded into Mérida last March. Unionized taxi drivers have blocked the airport in protest, and have countered with Cabify, their own app to attract tech-savvy riders.
Meanwhile, Uber’s expansion throughout Mexico continues with Cancun as its latest target. On Thursday, more than 500 taxi drivers gathered at a traffic circle to protest. In Playa del Carmen, a car suspected to be an Uber unit was physically blocked by union taxi drivers and towed away.
