Dzityá, Yucatán — The huge Tunich Craft Fair begins tonight (Friday), and many talented artisans traveled far to be part of it.
Exhibitors from the state of Michoacán arrived Thursday morning. Among them is Ramiro Garcia Sandoval, who is here for the third time with wood carvings inspired by sacred art.
He sells through, or came to close to it, before. “… And now I hope to surpass the sales that I achieved in the two previous years,” says Garcia Sandoval who, along with a dozen of fellow exhibitors, made a 35-hour bus trip from Morelia.
“It is far, but it is worth coming, because every year … more people come, and there are a lot of foreigners who come to buy from us,” said said Garcia Sandova.
The organizer of the fair, José Luis Pisté Chi, announced that tonight’s ribbon-cutting ceremony will feature comedian and impressionist Pierre David.
Many of the artisans didn’t travel nearly so far to be part of the Tunich fair.
“We have 34 local artisans who will be exhibiting their works in stone and wood, but also will come another hundred artisans from the outposts of Mérida and other municipalities that will offer hammocks, syrups, typical clothes like suits, huipiles and guayaberas,” said Pisté Chi.
A dozen cooks will serve local specialties such as sopa de lima, relleno negro, queso relleno, panuchos, salbutes and cochinita tortas or tacos.
