Cancun, Q. Roo – After two years’ construction and an investment of almost 2.5 billion pesos, T4 is ready for business.
President Enrique Peña Nieto, Gov. Carlos Manuel Joaquín González and Fernando Chico Pardo, the airport’s CEO, will inaugurate Terminal 4 at the Cancun International Airport on Tuesday.
The airport’s fourth terminal follows the completion of Terminal 3 in 2016. Cancun has the only airport in Mexico with four terminals.
Carlos Trueba Coll, general director of the airport, said that the new terminal will be able to serve 9 million more passengers. That means the country’s largest after Mexico City’s can mobilize 25 million passengers a year, more than three times its capacity in 1999.
The investment went toward new platforms, roadways, parking lots and the construction of the connecting taxiway. It has two double-height levels and a mezzanine.
The shopping area will consist of duty free shops, a food court and other businesses.
An integrated airport hotel is still in the works.
The Cancun International Airport first opened in 1974. Like Mérida’s airport, it is operated by ASUR, the Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste, connecting to 21 destinations in Mexico and to over 30 countries in the Americas, the Caribbean and Europe.
