Telephone price war comes to Mérida

izziLaunched in Mexico City and available in Mérida, a flat-rate phone and Internet service called Izzi has been announced by parent company Grupo Televisa.

But it’s not as new as it may seem. Izzi used to be called Cablemás, the area’s cable television provider. That fact was not lost on social media when Diario de Yucatán reported the story today.

The name is meant to sound like the English word easy, implying a consumer benefit.

Izzi customers can call land lines and mobile phones anywhere in Mexico, the U.S., Canada, the rest of the Americas and Europe for 400 pesos a month. The fee also includes high-speed Internet billed allowing 10 megabits to flow per second.

Cable television can also be bundled into the service. There are three options starting with 54 channels for 150 pesos a month.

All of this is intended to compete with Carlos Slim’s telephony companies, such as Telmex, which dominate the country.

The packages were announced yesterday at the Fiesta Americana Hotel. Izzi started operations last November in Mexico City. The rollout will continue in the coming months to Uman, Progreso, Valladolid, Tizimín, Izamal and Motul.

To date, the service reaches 12 million Mexican households, of which 340,000 and are located in Mérida, and is expected to expand this year to another 360,000 in the state.
