The “Yucatán Riviera” is a step closer.
A group of UADY architecture students sent by The National Fund for Tourism Development (FONATUR) has completed a six-month project in Telchac Puerto to shore up and coordinate the port town’s streets and facades.
The students presented Telchac Puerto Mayor José Humberto Marrufo Ramírez a plan for a new boardwalk, street furniture, signage, sidewalks and green spaces. They also defined a color palette for houses and buildings and shared ideas for overhauling the main park and relocating mass transit vehicles. New streets, beach palapas and piers have also been planned.
About a half hour east of Progreso, Telchac Puerto has about 1,800 inhabitants. Between January and April, beachfront homes are occupied mainly by foreign renters.
The professor leading the students spoke of the town’s present state of affairs.
“Currently the port is accessed by a desolate street, small benches, no vegetation, lifeless,” said Marisa Eljure Fajardo, advisor to the workshop project Medio Ambiente B.
FONATUR has long-range plans to reimagine and rebuild locales up and down the Gulf coast, creating a Yucatán Riviera tourist zone.
Funding is already in place for many of these projects, with work expected to begin in 2015.
