Sunday liquor sales extended for holidays

europea700Mérida, Yucatán — It’s a Christmas gift to the cocktail crowd: More time to stock the liquor cabinet during the holiday season.

Normally, Sunday liquor and beer sales are prohibited after 5 p.m., but through December, retailers can stay open until 10 p.m. That includes the final Sunday in December, which is Christmas Day.

The exemption applies to closed containers and has nothing to do with drinks served in restaurants or cantinas.

Local Chamber President Juan José Abraham Daguer says that every year, his agency petitions the government to allow longer sales hours. Each year, the municipality complies.

Abraham Daguer said that in December the demand for beer, wine and liquor increases while families host celebrations. Longer hours are not just a convenience to customers, but to help retailers recover from slow sales the previous months.

He also credited the city for suspending road and facade work in the historic center during the holidays, rather than impeding shoppers.
