Mérida, Yucatán — The Miami police came to share ideas on controlling crime, but walked away impressed with what they saw.
The technology employed by the Secretariat of Public Security (SSP) is better than what’s in Miami’s and other U.S. cities’ respective toolboxes, said Rodolfo Llanes, the chief of police in Miami.
“The communication and surveillance system is more robust than Miami and the intelligence sector is better and more organized,” he told Sipse.
The police chief and two of his colleagues visited the SSP over the weekend to make a diagnosis of the Yucatecan police system and make recommendations.
At a press conference in the SSP crisis room, Llanes said that the Miami police will train elements of the State Police Investigation Unit (PEI), which is similar to detectives in the United States who interrogate suspects and generate evidence that is presented in court
Llanas toured the SSP command center and 911 dispatch systems and reviewed protocols in place when the state police handle crisis situations.
