Twelve new hotels will rise across Mérida within the next few years, adding 1,600 rooms to the city’s already plentiful inventory.

Most will be near the still-unfinished International Convention Center on Calle 62 between avenidas Colón and Cupules. But investors are targeting other areas of the city as well.

In Altabrisa, opposite the Monument to the Haciendas, the five-story hotel portion of the Uptown Mérida complex is already visible. The name of the hotel has not been announced, although an adjacent Walmart and Starbucks is on the record.

Almost ready to open are two hotels, a Hotel Zar at the overpass on the Prolongación of the Paseo de Montejo, and a Marriott on Calle 60 North, at the U.S. Consulate site, said Jorge Escalante, president of the Tourism Business Council, or CETUR. The latter is set to open in September or October.

On the Periférico, a seven-story City Express Junior is nearly completed along the Altabrisa overpass toward Cholul.

The Sheraton chain and the Hotel Xixim will rise near the new convention center, according to unofficial reports from CETUR.

CETUR also discussed the possibility of two hotels in the land behind the Hyatt Regency, a site that was once thought to be suitable for the new convention center.

At a press conference representing the Mexican Chamber of Hotels, Ricardo Dájer Nahum admitted that some of these projects may never get off the ground.

“Building a hotel is a long process,” he said, bemoaning the red tape from politicians, INAH, public works and environmental officials.

TripAdvisor lists 96 hotels, not counting guesthouses and specialty lodging, in Mérida.
